HazCom is all about informing employees of the hazards associated with chemicals used on their job.  The major components of the standard include:

• Safety Data Sheets
• Labeling of Containers
• Information & Training

Even something as simple as water should be labeled, although you don’t need an SDS sheet for this particular chemical.  Not labeling a water container can pose practical problems even though its just water, such as:

• It should be considered suspicious as an unlabeled liquid and would justify some effort to verify it’s just water prior to disposal, handling, or use.
• Pouring out water onto the ground is generally considered acceptable.  However, dumping a liquid from an unlabeled container could attract concern.
• Labeling the container as water should help assure that the container wasn’t contaminated with a hazardous liquid during a previous use.
